SCAN LAND | VOF SUPPORT

SCAN Has received $25,000 from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation to continue making the SCAN Land on Hardware Street a public park! We are very proud of our team for writing a grant that received 100% of the funds we requested to do this work!

“We are excited to support this project, with its strong emphasis on community-building,” said VOF Executive Director Brett Glymph.

“The SCAN Land site will not only connect people to the outdoors, but also to their neighbors and their shared history through the arts and culture.” - VOF Board

Here an excerpt from our grant proposal:

BRIEF SUMMARY

ESTABLISHED IN 2004, SCOTTSVILLE’S CENTER FOR THE ARTS AND THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT (SCAN) IS A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WHOSE MISSION IS TO CREATE A SPACE FOR THE EXPLORATION OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT THROUGH THE ARTS. SCAN LAND IS A MULTI-PHASED PROJECT, AND INTENDS TO TRANSFORM SCAN'S 13 ACRE PROPERTY INTO A PUBLIC LANDSCAPE FOR THE COMMUNITY TO ACCESS, ENJOY, AND LEARN ABOUT THE CONVERGENCE OF NATURE, HUMANS, AND ART. OUR PRIORITY FOR PHASE 1 IS TO PROVIDE SAFER PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE PROPERTY.

INCREMENTAL MASTERPLAN

AFTER LEARNING FROM THE COMMUNITY THROUGH A SURVEY AND WORKSHOP, SCAN HAS RESTRUCTURED ITS APPROACH FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE SCAN LAND PROJECT TO BE MORE INCREMENTAL, SO WE CAN PROVIDE USE AND ACCESS SOONER TO THE COMMUNITY. THIS NEW APPROACH ALLOWS FOR FLEXIBILITY TOWARDS THE END PRODUCT AND INCORPORATE USER FEEDBACK ALONG THE WAY. THE BUDGET WILL INCLUDE FEES FOR DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION, AND MAINTENANCE; AND PRIORITIZING NEEDS BASED ON FEASIBILITY WITHIN BUDGET CONSTRAINTS. FOR PHASE 1, WE PROPOSE TO MAKE FOUNDATIONAL INTERVENTIONS THAT ALLOW FOR SAFER ACCESS TO SCAN LAND. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR OUR PROPOSED BUDGET BREAKDOWN.

THE PHASING DIAGRAM ABOVE ILLUSTRATES THE END GOALS FOR SCAN LAND AND ALL THE PHASES REQUIRED TO GET THERE. PHASES 2-4 ARE FOR REFERENCE ONLY AND MAY CHANGE DEPENDING ON FEEDBACK FROM FUTURE COMMUNITY USERS.

PHASE 1 | EACH CATEGORY WILL REQUIRE PLANNING+DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION/INSTALLATION, AND MAINTENANCE (shown in teal above)

  • SIGNAGE/WAYFINDING | THIS FAMILY OF WAYFINDING GRAPHICS WILL INCLUDE SIGNAGE FOR PURPOSES SUCH AS DIRECTIONS, EDUCATION, AND TRAILS. THESE GRAPHICS WILL ALSO INCLUDE THE CREATION OF A HANDOUT FOR THE SCAN LAND VISITOR, EITHER VIRTUALLY OR PHYSICALLY.

  • TRAIL BUILDING | THE TRAIL SYSTEM WILL CONSIST OF A COMBINATION OF MOWED, CLEARED PATHS, AND A BRIDGE DEPENDING ON SITE CONDITIONS ON SCAN LAND. THE AREAS THAT WILL NEED THE MOST AMOUNT OF WORK IS IN THE FOREST, AROUND THE POND, AND THE ZONE CONNECTING TO THE SEWER EASEMENT TRAIL/VAN CLIEF TRAIL.

  • RESTROOMS - TEMPORARY TOILET | AS A TEMPORARY MEASURE, WE PROPOSE TO RENT A PORTABLE TOILET TO AVOID IMPROPER HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL ON SCAN LAND. WE ALSO PROPOSE TO SCREEN THE PORTABLE TOILET SO IT BLENDS MORE GENTLY WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS.

  • SCAN LAND MAINTENANCE | ADDITIONAL MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY INSPECTIONS WILL NEED TO BE PERFORMED PRIOR TO “OPENING” UP THE LAND TO THE PUBLIC, INCLUDING A DAM INSPECTION, POND CLEANING/MAINTENANCE , AND GENERAL LAND MAINTENANCE AND UPKEEP.

SINCE WE BEGAN THE PRE-DESIGN PHASE OF THE SCAN LAND PROJECT, WE HAVE GATHERED COMMUNITY INFORMATION THROUGH A SURVEY AND A WORKSHOP. RESULTS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CAN BE VIEWED ON OUR WEBSITE. PLEASE SEE BELOW:

MAP | COUNTY INTERSECTION AT SCOTTSVILLE

SCOTTSVILLE SITS AT THE INTERSECTION OF ALBEMARLE, FLUVANNA, AND BUCKINGHAM COUNTIES, MAKING AN IDEAL LOCATION TO CELEBRATE THE DIVERSITY AMONG THE THREE DISTINCT COMMUNITIES.

MAP | SCOTTSVILLE VICINITY

ESMONT, PORTERS, CHARLOTTESVILLE, AND SCAN LAND’S PROXIMITY TO SCOTTSVILLE IS WITHIN 7.5 MILES. DUE TO THE RACIAL DIVIDE OF THE AREA, SCAN IS ALREADY REACHING OUT TO THE RESIDENTS OF ESMONT AND PORTERS SO THAT WE CAN ALSO HAVE THEIR ENGAGEMENT IN BUILDING A WELCOMING PUBLIC OUTDOOR SPACE.

MAP | SCOTTSVILLE + SCAN LAND

ONE MAJOR NORTH-SOUTH CONNECTOR ROAD INTO HISTORIC SCOTTSVILLE IS HARDWARE STREET (INDICATED AS A DOTTED ORANGE LINE). SCAN LAND IS ALSO LOCATED ON THIS ROAD. UNFORTUNATELY, WALKING ACCESSIBILITY ALONG THIS ROAD COULD BE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DUE TO THE HIGH SPEED TRAFFIC AND THE LACK OF A SIDEWALK/SHOULDER (SEE PHOTOS BELOW). THE INTRODUCTION OF SCAN LAND COULD ENCOURAGE MORE FOOT TRAFFIC ON VAN CLIEF NATURE AREA’S SEWER EASEMENT TRAIL TO REACH HISTORIC SCOTTSVILLE AND THE JAMES RIVER FROM THE NORTHERN NEIGHBORHOODS.

AS ILLUSTRATED ON THE MAP, SCAN LAND WOULD NOT ONLY BE AN EXTENSION OF CURRENT AND FUTURE GREENWAYS IN THE SCOTTSVILLE AREA, BUT ALSO BECOME A DESTINATION, WHERE SCAN WOULD HOST EVENTS THAT FOSTER, EDUCATE, AND INSPIRE THE INTERSECTION OF THE ARTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
