WHY PUBLIC ART AND DESIGN?
At SCAN we believe in the value of putting art and design in the public realm. This makes art and design accessible to all without any barriers. By creating murals and exhibitions in vacant storefronts, we are bringing our streetscapes and town buildings to life, and encouraging conversations between all. Public art boosts economies - it not only provides professional opportunities for artists, and gives value to the creative disciplines, but it also supports surrounding businesses. Businesses supply materials and labor; restaurants and hotels benefit from a site that attracts visitors. In addition, public art creates supportive learning environments and raises public awareness about important community issues, such as environmental stewardship and respect for diversity. We hope you will take a walk around Scottsville to see the work SCAN has done in collaboration with the Town of Scottsville and other organizations.
