INSTRUCTOR: Masahiro (Ken) Nagakui

DATE(S): Sundays, September 26 - October 24, 2021

*New students can join until the third week*

TIME: 3pm - 5pm

LOCATION: Victory Hall + Firing Day in North Garden

COST: $30/class + $30 Materials

INSTRUCTOR BIO + COURSE DESCRIPTION: Originally trained as a painter, Ken has been working with clay for the past 20 years, building his first kiln in Nelson county in 2005. During his childhood in Japan, Ken was always fascinated with the fragments of earthenware and arrowheads he found in the hills around his house; a fascination with a time when human life was not as complicated as the present day. Through his work, he aims to capture that simplicity by focusing on the relationship between human life and nature itself, allowing for a process that is more about experimentation and the rich history of working with natural materials.

This pottery class will aim to embody these values. Students will create hand-built work incorporating local clays and utilizing simple tools. They will then have the opportunity to fire their work in a wood kiln built by Ken himself, located in North Garden. The class will act as a thorough reminder of what is possible when we tune into the materials available from the land around us.
