ENCAUSTIC PAINTING WORKSHOP

Partnership with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), taught by local artist Karen Eide

Encaustic painting is an ancient process that uses molten, pigmented beeswax to create layered and luminous work. It is a stand-alone medium or one that is easily combined with a multitude of mediums and techniques. In this workshop, designed for all levels, you will learn classic encaustic painting processes as well as how to add oils, pastels, charcoal, graphite, watercolor, and collage, mixed media, and texture! You will come away with enough information to safely set-up your own encaustic studio, an equipment list, sources of supply, and a head full of new techniques and ideas. Encaustic painting, also known as “hot wax painting,” is an artistic technique that dates back to the Egyptians and is still used today by contemporary artists. Observe Karen Eide, VMFA Studio School Instructor and practicing artist, as she demonstrates the encaustic process and discover this medium.
